THis week, Gabriella CugnoThe new masterpiece reached my desk. Cugno (Chocolatier to 2023’s Wonka Movie) makes eggs like nothing else. They are heavy – the worst I’ve ever experienced and the opposite of what I wrote last week (‘simple milk chocolate’). His latest work of art is smoky, caramelised almonds and hazelnut praline eggs with pieces of chili and salted caramel (other versions are available, but all in similar lines, including vegan). These are my perfect eggs in terms of associations. I’m glad to be just looking at them.
Cugno makes each other, so they are limited editions and start at £ 44 (eggs are sent a week before Easter). If they are selling, go to the waiting list for next year. They are worth it.
At the other end of the scale, Waitrose has made three worthy offerings that everyone should get. Caramel Sam Eggcups, £ 4.50, reminds me of something from childhood: creamy milk chocolate with salted caramel filling, sweet with all senses, and delicious. Buy a packet for everyone you know, big and small. Blue eggs, £ 7, are also salted caramel, a super pale blue blond choc exterior with milk chocolate and caramel filling.
In terms of treatment, I think the duo eggs, £ 7, are my favorite. Many more salted caramel (I know, I know) half the egg and hazelnut praline in the other half. They are close to the old creme egg experience (if not like them) you can get today.
