The historic 150th anniversary of the MCG Ashes trial in 2027 will be held as a day-night match.
Long-locked over 11 to 15 March, Cricket Australia-Effo-Australia’s one-off match against England confirmed the first pink-ball trial in the area.
Noteworthy, the first trial in 1877 and the centenary test in 1977 both resulted in the Australian win of 45 running.
The CA insists that the presentation of the test as a daily match will allow the larger crowd to attend, as it will be played in March, outside the school vacation season.
This will be the latest a men’s test has been presented in a summer since Australia hosted Pakistan in 1978-79.
The CA still holds the MCG contractual rights until the end of March each tag, even though the AFL has recently begun playing matches on the ground before the end of the month.
“The 120th anniversary of the MCG testing will be one of the great cricket events and playing under the lights will be an amazing way to celebrate both the rich heritage of our game and the modern evolution of Cricket,” said new CA boss Todd Greenberg.
“It will also help ensure that many people can attend and watch what will be an amazing occasion.
“The centenary of the trial created many iconic performances, including five consecutive borders of David Hookes from Tony Greig, Rick McCosker survived with a broken jaw and Derek Randall’s rugged century, and I’m sure that the -150th trial will create his own living memory.”

It is set to be the second day-to-day test of the MCG following the success of Australian women’s crushing in England in the area in February.
The Pat Cummins’ team will host England in the next summer in a five test series as they seek to maintain the urn they hold since 2017-18.
