Charli XCX won five awards in the Brit, along with the album of the year for his summer reference, green-hued, massive debauched album brat.
At a ceremony at the O2 Arena of London, he was also awarded the British Artist of the Year, Song of the Year for Guess (featuring Billie Eilish), and one of the five genre awards, for the Dance Act. Earlier in the week he was named Songwriter of the year.
The win rides a Zeitgeist-surfing year for the singer, whose known trash sound and appearance is unique to provide a whole cultural culture: “Brat Summer”, along with various “Brat” expressed objects. It was not specified that Charli insisted that the seemingly un-brat Kamala Harris was, in fact, brat-but centered around the irresistible prevention, dirty lifestyle and relentless cool.
Brat led the UK chart and spent 38 weeks in the top 20, and it was critical to claim for its scope: between club bangers puts a series of thoughtful, romantic and emotional raw tracks that laid out Charli’s anxiety about popularity and potential motherhood. It was also a success in the US, reaching No 3 and won three Grammys.
He thanked some of his heroes in dance music – resulting in perhaps the first mention of the Autechre at the Brit Awards – as well as Eilish for alerting his contribution to guess on a number of days, saying: “Not all artists [as] voluntarily, despite their claims. “On the winning album of the year, he said:” I always feel like an outsider … especially in the British music industry. So it feels good to recognize this album, when I haven’t made any sacrifices. “He told his fellow artists:” You don’t have to compromise your vision. “
The Chief Architect of Brat’s Dance-Pop Sound, AG Cook, won the Brit award for Producer of the Year. He also issued a solo album during the right of awards, entitled Britpop.
Charli – Real Name Charlotte Aitchison, 32 – The music first released in 2008, but this is her first Brit Award win following four previous nominations. Only one actor won more brits in a single year: Raye, who set a record last year with six, and has now been added to his overall haul by winning the R&B Act for the second year in succession.
Another gesture that adds to a winner of 2024 is the final dinner celebration. The flamboyant five-piece was awarded the Rising Star Award last year, and now chose the best new artist. Playing a broad style of classic rock and alt-pop, their debut album Prelude to Ecstasy went to No. 1 in February 2024, and they were considered one of the best live acts in the UK.
Bassist Georgia Davies said “they would not be a band without a reliable UK’s independent areas – they were the life of the industry, and they were dying”. He called on the Arena operators to support the financial areas of indigenous people, and told artists playing the latter “to continue to continue, as that was the best type of art”.
The final dinner celebration was lost in the British Group category, though, in a Giantkilling Underdog: Jazz Quintet Ezra Collective, who also beat Coldplay, The Cure and Horizon took me.
Playing propulsive instruments influenced by Fela Kuti as well as hip-hop, funk and spiritual jazz, they are the leading light in the recent resurrection of the Jazz of London. Like the last dinner celebration, their live show was strictly acclaimed, and in November they became the first British Jazz Act to play 12,500-capacity of London Wembley Arena. They were also the first jazz group to win an award to the Brit, and in 2023 they became the first Jazz Act to win the Mercury Prize.
After taking the awards, Bandleader Femi Koleoso appealed for support for clubs and music education, saying: “There are so many problems faced with larger society in the UK, we’re not sure how to fix, but the solution likes to give a young trumpet a trumpet, a saxophone – because if you make them a wish.”
In the genre categories-voted by the public-Sam Fender took the Rock/Alternative Act Prize a second time, this week he hit No. 1 with his third album watching: the fastest selling vinyl album of a British artist this century, and the biggest opening of the week for a British artist since Harry Styles in 2022.
Waggishly Host Jack Whitehall introduced as “someone who put more smiles on Geordie’s faces than a Turkish dentist”, Fender also conducted the track of the title of his new album.
Former Little Mix member Jade defeated Charli XCX at the Best Pop Act, who moved to a successful solo career with the hit angel of my dreams. He added in his three wins with a small mix, including in 2021 when they became the first female act to win the British group. He also defeated Dua Lipa, who had one night to forget, not winning any of his four nominated categories.
He may have won three brits in the past and remains a commercial weight, but Stormzy is something that wins the surprise in the hip-hop/grime/rap category. Central Cee has become a favorite, the world’s most popular rapper in recent years (though, like Fender, his recent -New No 1 album could not rush the greatness to the next year of Brits).
As well as quoting a Bible psalm and says he killed his cornea playing with Padel, Stormzy Namechecked Central Cee in his acceptance of speech, saying that as he was grateful for the win, “I don’t really think that this award should vote for the fan … sometimes I don’t think it allows people to have their moments.”
The public vote is between mid -January and mid -February, which means that shouting at Stormzy’s recent campaign does not affect his votes.
This year’s Rising Star Award was given in December to singer-songwriter Myles Smith, who was appointed for three additional awards, including the Song of the Year for his big hit stargazing, which he performed at the ceremony with Nice to meet you.
Choosing the awards, the musician working in the Luton class responded to the British government: “If British music is one of the strongest exports of culture we have had, why are you treating it like a thought for many years?”
“We need to protect the foundations that do it,” he added. Like the last dinner celebration, he appealed to the Arena operators to support British indigenous peoples, and asked the music industry: “Are we building careers, or are we just chasing the moments … Please attach to artists who have been a viral hit.”
This is a emotion shared by Chappell Roan, who calls for artists to “not be forced to make music based on what is trending” as he took the International Song Award for Good Luck, Babe! The US pop singer-songwriter also won an award for international artist, which he intended to “trans artists, drag queens, fashion students, sex workers and Sinéad o’Connor.”
The Irish Rockers Fontaines DC took the international group, their second win in that category.
Diana Ross and Millie Bobby Brown, Sabrina Carpenter, was introduced to a reactive Global Success Award, following a year where she had three UK No 1 units with a No. 1 album. He thanked his British fans, saying: “In a major country drinking tea, you stream the shit with Espresso … Cheerio!”
Carpenter opened the live show on The Strains of Rule, Britannia! To the dancers who dressed up as guardians of the Buckingham Palace, which separates a chart-topping espresso chart-topping and then a water test, rugged bed chem rendition. The show also features performances from Jade, the Last Supper, British singer Grandma Young, singer Teddy Swims, and Ezra Collective, who performed next to London Youth Kinetika Bloco and twice British Jorja Smith.
Whitehall, who had previously hosted the show between 2018 and 2021, returned with a rain of good-natured jibes targeting the wishes of Simon Cowell, KSI, Coldplay (“The Public School Nickelback”) and even the “Cringe” Zelenskyy-Trump meeting. He supports the boundaries of good taste with a comment about Jade’s live performance, saying: “I really thought Diddy could do it for the theme of the white party”, and eventually the sex toys and an artist movie were referred to -all of these were releasing brits as award -bawdest, booziest event. But he also led a sincere segment of Memoriam with Liam Payne, calling him “incredible -belief in a kind soul”.
Aside from the public who voted for genre categories, Brits were voted by 1,338-powerful Brits Academy, surrounded by musicians as well as industry and media numbers.
