At least 48 people were killed in the collapse of an illegal gold -operated gold in Western Mali, authorities and local resources said.
Mali is one of the leading gold manufacturers in Africa, and mining sites are a regular scene of deadly landslides and accidents.
Authorities struggle to control irregular mining of precious metal in the country, which is among the poorest in the world.
“The toll on [6pm] Now [Saturday] were 48 dead following the collapse, ”said a police resource.
“Some of the victims fell into the water. Among them was a woman with her baby behind her.”
A local officer confirmed the cave-in, while the Kenieba Goldminers’ Association also puts the death of 48.
The search for the victims continues, the head of an environmental organization said.
The Saturday’s accident occurred at an abandoned site previously operated by a Chinese company, resources told the AFP.
In January, a landslide in a golden gold in Southern Mali killed at least 10 people and left much more missing, most women.
Just a year ago, a tunnel collapsed at a goldmining site in the same region as the day -to -day collapse of Saturday, which killed more than 70 people.
