Allegra Mcevedy: ‘Cooking has saved my life’ | Life and style

I’m happy kid, President of the school at 11, then proceeded to St Paul Girls’ School. I have to be a barrister, because I’m good at chat and liked the debate. Mum is the foodie. We always do things in the kitchen while my sister is in the garden.

I go to every outpost of the Roman Empire as a child. My dad [Colin McEvedy] is a psychiatrist, but his love is history; He sold a million copies of his history books. The holidays will see a mausoleum, which measures the cannon in a castle in Istanbul, which spreads to the rocks. I don’t have a beach holiday until I’m 28.

It’s all tits-up In 1998, when I was 17. I realized that I was gay, my mother died and drove me to school. Any of that has been a lot for a 17 -year -old, but the three of them are combined are seismic. I lost. All parameters are blown.

Mum died a liver transplant. He has cirrhosis, even if he does not drink. His father built railroads in Africa – they think he might have taken it there. Doctors said that if he had no transplant, he would have been dead for two years. After the surgery he was no longer able to get the consciousness.

No rudderless Press the edges of how I felt. I didn’t do well with my A-level. My dad told me not to go to university because I could think. Everything I expected was gone. I moved to Manchester and sold the perfume-to-door perfume. I was clubbing, taking all the drugs, trying to get away from myself. On my 21th birthday I was chatting with my dad about how I always liked cooking -maybe I should open my own restaurant.

Cooking has saved my life. Without it I would have found the face in a ditch with a bottle of whiskey. I went to Cordon Bleu School and found my tribe. No matter where you come from or who you are, you are judging how much you work, how good your food is, how good you are all in the kitchen.

I worked with a lot of places posh. I made Sean Connery’s 60th birthday on my first night at Green’s Champagne and Oyster Bar, Lady Di’s favorite restaurant. Then I worked at the River Café, Belvedere, Groucho … It works at Robert de Niro’s Tribeca Grill in New York, who sells super expensive food, which I came to my mission statement: the best food at most People.

I became a weird The successful consultant: for Pret, Cook and particular chartwells, which serves 180,000 foods day -day at 1,500 schools. I should have had a hand on the food gazillions of people they eat every day.

Now has been The straightforward gay is boring. But when I came out with my friends, a few stopped talking to me.

My MBE has been given me with snot and tears. I posted a picture of my parents on their wedding day inside my suit jacket when I went to Buckingham Palace. I wish they could see their daughter coming. When they called my name, I just blushed.

My wife, Lucie, is convinced that I have ADHD. He said my default state was eternal movement. My daughter had a combined diagnosis last year. It helped him. I’m happy to move on – I have coping mechanisms.

I’m old now Like my mother when she died. So not to die anytime soon is a big for me. I continue to the top of my health. I like wine a little, but I go down to the fags after many years. I have a personal trainer, I don’t have a sedentary life, eat well. I will take where I am for the life I have.

Allegra Mcevedy will talk about work, foodie travels and his book, Chefs wanted, to destinations: The Holiday & Travel Show, Olympia London, from January 30th to 2 February
